Establishment of new institute for computational biology in progress
Fresh progress has been made regarding the efforts to co-establish a new CAS institute in Shanghai during CAS Vice President Chen Zhu's recent visit to Germany from Sept 6 to 10.
While he was in Munich, Prof. Chen reached consensus with officials of the Max Planck Society on such issues as setting up a partner institute for computational biology in line with the operating model of Max Planck institutes, its charter and director recruitment.
According to the agreement, the two sides will jointly make an initial investment of about 15 million yuan (about US$ 1.8 million) to the Shanghai institute. Advertisements for a world-wide hunting of the institute's director will be made in international journals like Nature and Science. A workshop for the new institute will be held in mid December.
During Prof. Chen's trip, he also visited several Max Planck institutes to make a on-spot study of their structures and operational mechanisms of Max Planck institutes.
